ICC - Farmers Market in Community Park

  • Community Park, across from the Islesboro Community Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Every Thursday in Community Park you'll find folks gathered for fresh produce and flowers, olive oil, meat and cheese, live music, local crafts, and Bluewater Bakery's famous morning buns!

The market is made possible thanks to our dedicated volunteers who help set up, direct traffic, and address any other needs that arise. And it is much more robust thanks to our intrepid vendors who brave the boat to join us.

It is a joy to see the whole community — year-rounders, summer residents and visitors, kids of all ages, and a large assortment of dogs — gathered together every week in celebration of the summer season.

See https://www.islesborocommunitycenter.org/farmers-market for more information.

Garden Tour

Garden Tour

The seventeenth bi-annual Islesboro Garden Day will be held on Monday, August 3rd, rain or shine. The tour will include properties belonging to Dianne and Kent Bein, Brita Holmquist Bonechi, Abby and Jeff Diggins, Topsy and Tom Gillespie, Sue Hatch and Tom Tutor, Ginny and John King, Islesboro Central School, the Alice L. Pendleton Library, and Jennifer and Philippe Selendy.

Proceeds from this year’s Garden Day will go towards the Islesboro Central School’s garden, namely through improvements to the hoop house, which will enable the growth of vegetables throughout the year.

The tour will be set up similarly to Garden Days in previous years. The gardens will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; only gardens will be included on the tour, not houses. Everyone will go in their own cars, at their own pace. Brita Holmquist Bonechi has kindly offered to welcome visitors for refreshments on her beautiful porch.

A mailing about Islesboro Garden Day, which includes a registration form, will go out in early July. Admission is $18 per person. Anyone who has not received the mailing and would like to join the tour should contact Linda Gillies (207-734-6452, linda@gillies.com); copies of the mailing will also be available at the Dark Harbor Shop. The mailing serves as the ticket; there are no receipts.

The Venerable Achok Rinpoche - Compassion in Troubled Times

The Venerable Achok Rinpoche - Compassion in Troubled Times

“Yoga for the Mind”

Ven. Achok Rinpoche was born in Eastern India. Rinpoche was recognized as the reincarnation of the achok Rinpoche of Lithang, eastern Tibet. He was received at Sera Mey Monastery and began preliminary training such as the memorization of ritual tests, sutras, and other trainings until the age of ten.

From his eleventh year, Rinpoche began his formal training in Buddhist philosophical studies (the five treatises of Buddhist philosophy) including dialectics, the Prajñāpāramitā classics and their commentaries and oral transmissions traditions, the Madhyamaka philosophy, Abhidharma, Pramana, and Vinya. All based on the works of Nāgārjuna, Lama Tsongkapa and three main disciples. Under the personal guidance of his spirtual master, Kyabje Yongyal Rinpoche, his studies were enriched with private instruction in related areas of Buddhist practice.

In 1997, at the age of 20, Achok Rinpoche sat for the examinations of the Gelupa at Ganden Monastery, Sera Monastery, and Drepong Monastery. In 1998, he obtained the Geshe Lharampa degree with the highest honor outside Tibet.

Rinpoche has been teaching in this country since 2003. This will be his fifth year visiting Islesboro.
